It looks like a Victorian coliseum. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is a very odd pub, and has proudly been so for a very long time - most of my lifetime at least. Bear in mind that you're within spitting distance of the Houses of Parliament, and the thought of drag queens on ceiling swings singing Gilbert & Sullivan arias takes on a strange new resonance. It's one of the great shames of London that it no longer has a Theatre Museum. The Covent Garden venue was closed down and its collections went to the V&A. Now, though, the Museum of Comedy (not to be confused with the Cartoon Museum) has opened its doors in Bloomsbury, and has a website here.
