I spent my whole childhood in a state of irrational fear, and started writing horror stories as a way of exploring my own worst-case scenarios, and by doing so curing them. In the early 1930s, George and Ira Gershwin wrote a pair of political satires, 'Of Thee I Sing' and 'Let 'Em Eat Cake', which posited a dark future for American politics.
