Frightening Is Coming

Reading & Writing

After 13 collections of short stories I swore I’d never write another – particularly after my disastrous decision to go with small press for ‘Red Gloves’, a massive double-sided book which look stunning but which never reached bookshops.

However, with the approaching arrival of my backlist of 19 books as e-publications it made sense to round up all my remaining uncollected stories, write a bunch of new ones, and turn this into the 20th book. The books all come with new matching covers, and if any sell well they’ll reappear in print to keep the style. Design freaks will notice that the short story collections are cleverly separated from the novels by a simple visual device. The 20th volume is ‘Frightening’, and the running order of the 13 stories it contains will look like this. The ones which have run in (often obscure) publications have been rewritten. The subjects range from a twisted new version of ‘Cinderella’ to a historical moment that changed the world, to a rare SF outing for me. The last is a play script which will be performed in the spring of next year in london.

We’re just finalising that in the next few weeks, Jay – it should be late autumn but I’ll put the date up here the moment I have it.

I see the caterpillar flag is back. I always think “cute” when I read it and that must be the only one of your stories to which that word can be appropriately applied. Good luck with this.

Been waiting forever for a collection to appear in Audiobook form.

Any word on if this gets a audio release?

  9. admin says:

I don’t know about the audio rights; I’ll ask my agent for you.

Is it possible to put all the covers of the new/re-print covers on the website in the book section, say as e-publications? It would be good to see them all together.

Red Gloves is a lovely book but as small press it did have a small print run, it’s out of print now, sadly.
