No Tide? No Problem!

wake_canals_3074612a A lot of Londoners forget that we live on a network of canals (not me; my flat is surrounded by them) but it's nice to be reminded by this, which comes via the lovely Londonist and YouTube - it was produced by, ahem, a 'well-known drinks company'. He's clearly mad, although I'm assuming the stunts were very carefully staged - but what's towing him? I'm amazed that the Waterways Board let him do it, but it's pretty cool all the same.

He is being "towed" by a winch.

It looks like he's being towed on a portable winch - it's being dragged at 24 seconds in and it's visible taking up the cable at 2 minutes 16 seconds. I wonder if it was made for this or modified?

It's a winch - we have several at the wakeboarding centre at Chasewater, near where I live in the Lichfield area.

I assume a power winch and what did they do, move it every little bit of distance? Knowing that almost spoils the mood, but as Chris said, a lot of fun and very cool.

Interesting how later comments end up ahead of one's own making it look as if one hasn't bothered to read other people's answers. Doesn't "one" sound prissy and pissed off? And I'm not, you know.
