‘Supermodel Naomi Campbell To Give Testimony At War Crimes Trial’

If you remember such things, the Streatham-born supermodel is alleged to have received a “blood diamond” from the former Liberian president Charles Taylor while staying at Nelson Mandela’s home in September 1997. Taylor, the first former African leader to be tried in an international war crimes court, is accused of arming rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone in return for the gems.

But this is the bit that gets me.

Campbell herself, whose appearance today has prompted the arrival in The Hague of hundreds of international journalists, has been unwilling to testify over the claims, resisting the prosecution’s entreaties to give evidence until she was issued last month with a subpoena.

Is that what it takes to get anyone to cover the crimes of a murderous despot? The hacks turn up because of a supermodel? I’m going for a lie-down now, my head hurts.

  1. Peter Student says:

Reminiscent of the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide. When French troops entered and discovered the horrors that preceded, we were all watching O.J. Simpson speeding down the Freeway in his Bronco…

  2. Steve says:

And to cap it all, this is what the stupor-model had to say about it:

“I didn’t really want to be here,” she said. “I just want to get this over with and get on with my life, this is a big inconvenience for me.”

Inconvenience. Never say that my lack of faith in the human race isn’t justified.
