America In London

London

Further to my post about Texas, I passed a rather neglected statue with American historical significance yesterday. John Cartwright was the first English writer to openly maintain the Declaration of Independence, and as it says here ‘Refused to draw his sword against the Rising Liberties of an Oppressed and Struggling People’. It would be nice to think that some charitable US organisation would polish him up a bit.

I seem to remember reading that during the American War of Independence – and the argument that America had no representatives in our Parliment, some Judge of the Admiralty (Sir James Marriott)argued as boats plied their trade between Greenwhich and America the colonies were technically part of the Manor of Greenwhich so represented by Greenwhich’s MP! Who’d of thunk your old home was sort of capitol of America – Yikes!
