in the early 90s Berlin was a place with a lot going on. Everyone I knew and met there were taking classes just-'cause, there were exhibitions and gigs everywhere, it was a very free atmosphere and because the wall wasn't long down all the lads were suddenly not so exempt from national-service, so were keeping their heads down. It was like an art film about the 60s. The people were tall, good looking, earnest, political and well read. It was quite a lot different to London - albeit in my experiences of the time as I was to-and-fro each at the time.

They were perhaps a bit too much into quoting Monty Python to the English boy, mind...

Christopher,
Will it be coming to the US at the same time?
I discovered your books back in November somehow (I think it might have been a suggestion by Amazon from when I purchased the Flavia de Luce series) and finished all of them in a matter of a month and a half! Anyways I have beyond fallen in love with the series and definitely consider your books some of my favorite books (so much so that I named the cat I recently adopted Crippen). The wait for A Memory of Blood is killing me, so I am hoping that the next delay isn't too long!

Dunedin, that should read. All these cases are extensively written about on WIki, if anyone's interested.

We have two ongoing cases here which have their base in the 1990s. David Bain(who was accused, found guilty, appealed, retried and acquitted of murdering his family in Dundedin), and Peter Ellis(who was convicted for child sex offences in Christchurch). There were major questions before, during and after both cases, but it is interesting to note which one the media/publishers have consistently considered to be the most 'viewer/reader friendly', while the other is virtually ignored.

Also reminded that an autobiography was brought out by Macsyna King, the mother of twin babies who had been killed, for which she and her then partner blamed eachother. For once, the media's word du jour 'outrage' was pretty close to the actual public reaction to this book being published, especially only a couple of years after the deaths.

Surely there has to be some sort of moral line to draw, otherwise what separates publishers from the scandal-rag redtops. Or am I just being hopelessly idealistic?

As the long-term husband of a non-dour German, I can only say that Germans have in general gotten a bad rap. Berliners are amazingly funny and German musicians are of a very high caliber. I'd estimate that what most non-Germans think a German is is many generations out of date. But this is true of nearly every country now.

I am so glad that something can change people's opinions of Germans as dour spoil sports. I wish we did Mardi Gras here other than just eating pancakes on the day itself.
