The Sunday Song!
The new-look blog is taking it out of me. It’s a lot of work keeping it fresh every damn day. Sunday is therefore the new Friday today, and you’re getting a song, but it’s a good one. Some years back two plays about London’s club scene played off against each other. One was ‘Taboo’ with Boy George, and looked at Leigh Bowery and the crazy performance-art boys and girls at Taboo, the other was the Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Closer To Heaven’, covering roughly the same ground.
My money was on the Pet Shop Boys because they had a track record of producing hits in other media. (Their score for ‘Battleship Potemkin’ is superb.) They were professionals, whereas Boy George seemed a bit – well, flaky doesn’t cover it. But in their determination to not frighten the punters coming ‘up west’ for a night out the Pec Shop Boys produced a surprisingly anodyne version of clubland’s scandals. Boy George, on the other hand, really went for it and took away the prize – his version was funny, sad and above all honest. Here’s one the the tracks.
