Sounds Like James Bond

The Arts

I always work listening to music, and today was James Bond day at Fowler Towers. After writing here about John Barry, I was talking to friends about David Arnold taking over Barry’s musical duties on the 007 films, and the general opinion was that Arnold was really nothing more than an accomplished John Barry mimic.

I countered by saying that I thought the score to ‘Casino Royale’ was terrific and felt like a truly classic early Bond score, with stripped back orchestration and a melody through-line that Barry would have been proud of.

Then something struck me. I played the title track again, this time overlaying it onto the original Bond theme. Of course, the main chords of the theme form the melody of the ‘Casino Royale’ track. So I have to retract the idea that Arnold had stepped out of Barry’s shadow. I still like ‘Vesper’s Theme’ though.

Ah, and yes, that is me I’m afraid, standing in for 007 on a photo shoot.

How To Impersonate Famous People is still my most frequently read book. Carmen Miranda is my most frequently impersonated famous person.
