Art Deco London

London

There’s a surprising amount of art deco tucked away in London if you know where to look. I spotted this building, called Shropshire House, in a side-alley off Tottenham Court Road today. I don’t register having seen it before, but I guess the new paint-job has made it stand out.

A few roads behind it is – or rather was – a very cute little art deco garage that still sold petrol until a few months ago, when it closed down. I seem to recall that it features in the film ‘An Education’.

  1. Great building. I don’t recall seeing it either when I have been in London. And never a truer word was written “There’s a surprising amount of art deco tucked away in London if you know where to look”.

There is an Art Deco building apparently owned by the McCann Erickson Ad Agency located in Bloomsbury. It is elegant in daylight but quite lovely in the evening when there are lights behind the shaft of green glass. Can’t find the address, though.
