Title

The Return Of The Toff Thug

Christopher Fowler
It's been reported that the headmaster of Lord Wandsworth College, a £20,000-a-year boarding school in Hampshire, has suspended 10 per cent of his upper-sixth after spotting pictures on Facebook of them fighting and damaging property at a party in a country house hotel. In recent weeks, three former boys from City of London Freemen's School were convicted after an horrific assault. Seven pupils at Uppingham were expelled after a 16-year-old lower sixth-former was attacked. And at Stowe two teenagers were arrested after a knife fight in a dormitory when a midnight water fight got out of hand. We thought the posh oik had vanished after the Thatcher years, but they're apparently back. Fighting seems to be a rite of passage for British kids, a testosterone-shedding process you went through and were treated with relative leniency so that you could then get on with your life. We'll see what happens this time, but at least it'll provide Viz with new episodes of 'Raffles, Gentleman Thug'.

We live a few miles away from Sherborne Boy's School. The pupils (all nationalities) are allowed to roam the town centre, but seemingly are well behaved. What goes on behind closed doors is another thing!Could be like the Hellfire club for all I know!

Do you think that, unlike in the Thatcher era, modern toff thugs will have to perhaps make a coalition with some of the more bookish kids in order to win an overall dormitory majority?

Public schools have long had that veneer of sophistication and undertow of cruelty - I suspect there will be a 'wave' of these sorts of reports and general 'toff bashing' on the agenda. Where would we Brits be without our class war..............
