Sex, Death & Sharp Objects

London

In Paris at the weekend, I was reminded once more that France does not operate in the same kind of ‘Nanny State’ atmosphere as England. After creeping about the deserted (and partially flooded) Paris Catacombs, I went to a modern art exhibition where the French families in front of me happily took their toddlers around displays of fetishised female nudity and art that you were allowed to attack with kitchen knives. One French father had a lengthy conversation with his young daughter about a squatting female nude dressed only in red high heels. Unsurprisingly, French children generally seem to be a lot more well-adjusted by early exposure to taboos.
