The Missing Book Revealed

Reading & Writing

Over the years readers have asked me about a volume of short stories I wrote called ‘More City Jitters’ that simply does not seem to exist. Well, I’ve always explained that it only came out in the US, and that although I no longer had it on my shelf, it surely did exist. I’ve finally managed to buy back a copy for my own library. Phew – for a moment I was beginning to doubt there was ever such a book…

    is it really that rare?

I think I got my copy many moons ago from abe

surely the other missing book is Plastic?

The Book Plastic is now legend.A bit like the holy grail.

Plastic was never actually released, but was announced by Little Brown or someone like that. The listing one finds on Amazon (USA or UK) is erroneous.

If one may speak for the storied author, cautiously, the book was later re-titled and re-written a few times, then came quite close to publication again, but the economic down-turn had adverse effects upon the firm set to publish it, and that incarnation was scrapped prior to announcement along with the company as well.

Bits of “Plastic” may appear in various forms someday… much like the bits of flotsam in Regents Canal, one might say.

I thought the ultra-rare one was actually “City Jitters 2”, as “The Bureau of Lost Souls” was published as “More City Jitters” in America, wasn’t it?

I seem to remember the first few chapters appearing on an older version of this site, but after that no more!

No, ‘Bureau’ shares some of the stories, but ‘More’ – and indeed the US ‘City Jitters’ – have New York-set wraparound stories.

  7. Peter Lee says:

So what about “City Jitters 2” then? What was that, as it seems impossible to find (and is the only one of your books I don’t have).

On this site – http://wapedia.mobi/en/Christopher_Fowler CJ2 doesn’t have a ISBN no. and I’ve never seen a copy, despite years of trying to track one down.

also on the site is a link to a Sherlock Holmes story by
    Mr Fowler I wasn’t aware of – http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/sherlock/ladydownstairs1.shtml

“City Jitters 2” has even been mentioned in the front of some of Christopher’s books too, yet there seems to be no trace of it anywhere. Tell us more, Christopher!

Okay, when I wrote the first ‘City Jitters’ (my third book but my first genre volume) it had a very British wraparound tale of town planners arguing over an architects’ model. The US publisher didn’t want this, so I replaced it with a different linking tale about the same architect heading for New York.
The book did well and they wanted a sequel, so I continued the linking story (I think the architect ends up in the Hudson) and wrote new tales. Some of these tales eventually went into ‘The Bureau Of Lost Souls’ in the UK, some were lost in the shuffle, and a bit of the linking tale ended up in ‘Uncut’.
But what I liked were the matching US covers. There was also a great US cover for ‘Rune’, with a lion on the front. If I can find my copy I’ll post it on the site.
