The Pubs That Vanish

London

In the back of my novel ‘The Victoria Vanishes’ I list all the pubs mentioned in the story. A number of these are under threat from property developers, and some have already disappeared. You can see how many others we’ve lost by looking for corners like this one, now a private residence, on Wharfdale Road, N1. The curved central panel would have housed the name of the brewery and the beers it offered.

Local pubs provide neutral territory where neighbours can meet, but because they’re often built on corners, their sites are especially valuable to developers. Because of their neutrality, they were often used as coroners’ offices or makeshift courts.

There goes the neighbourhood.
